Really lovely and interesting site with a new information board setting out the history of Burwell Castle (and the Roman villa and Anglo Saxon burh for to this). The castle is close to Burwell church and the natural spring (which is believed to have been the source for early settlement at the site). Well worth a visit if you’re nearby and want to find a quiet spot to enjoy the history and nature of the spot!

Remains of a castle being built by king Stephen during a period known as the Anarchy to curtail the rebellious acts of the Earl of Essex, Geoffrey de Mandeville. The castle was started along with a number of other castles but was never finish when Geoffrey was killed trying to attack the castle. The castle was being built on an earlier Roman site. It was an unusual castle in the form of a rectangular platform with a motte in its centre, surround by a broad bottomed ditch. The earthworks continued to be used as part of a manorial site which was unfortified with a record of a private chapel being added in 1246. It is free to visit along a footpath, there is parking nearby.

A very cool place. In truth there isn't lot to see here. But there's lots to imagine. The green area around the castle is large. On the day we visited some people were dressed up in armour and were jousting which was pretty epic! We walked around the whole site and it's fun to imagine what it could have been like. The spring that feeds the moat is still active and it makes for a boggy walk around some corners. Some of the sides are steep! There's nothing on the top as far as you can see. The signs are very weathered now and need freshening up!!! Worth a visit. Park on the busy side streets.

Limited parking near the church, best described as a lumpy green field but it's free and great for exploring with kids. You can get down to the ancient crystal clear spring by going left at the gate near the church, if you follow the water will take you into the old ramparts which is a great spot for exploring. Lots of old trees, shallow pools and hidden areas.
